The Director General of the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, Mustapha Ahmed, wants Nigerians to always adhere to the Early Warning Signs (EWS) from the National Hydrological Agency and other relevant bodies to prevent themselves from falling victim to flooding.
Ahmed spoke at Echara, in Ikwo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, South East Nigeria when the Agency distributed relief materials worth millions of Naira, to thousands of residents identified as victims of 2022 flooding in the area.
According to NEMA, over forty thousand persons across five villages in the agrarian community were directly affected by the devastating floods during the last rainy season, with over twenty thousand of them displaced.
NEMA’s DG represented by the acting Zonal Coordinator of the Agency in the South East region, Thickman Tamino, says the donation was a demonstration of the Federal government’s concern for the victims.
Responding on behalf of the affected communities, the member representing Ikwo/Ezza Federal Constituency, Chinedu Ogah, expressed gratitude to the Federal government for the gesture, noting that the problem of flooding in Nigeria is solvable but with concerted efforts from governments at all levels.
