The proposed continuous voter registration exercise scheduled to begin may 27, 2024, in Edo state, may be reviewed, in some areas of the state, following reports of floods destroying movable and immovable items at the office of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, in Benin city.

INEC in a statement released on Saturday may 25, and signed by its national commissioner and chairman information and voter education, Sam Olumekan said it received a report from its Edo state headquarters that the office in benin city was completely submerged in flood, after a Friday downpour, wreaked havoc.

The statement revealed that the voter enrollment machines already configured for the forthcoming continuous voter registration, CVR, in the state,  were affected.

Olumekan said preliminary assessment shows that the downpour damaged a section of the building, noting that movable and immovable items were submerged, including vehicles parked at the premises as well as office furniture and equipment.

He said  the commission is however delivering additional machines from the neighbouring states to make up for the shortfall and it is determined to ensure that the CVR in all the 192 wards across edo state will proceed on Monday 27th November 2024 as scheduled.

The statement added that though the attention of the security agencies and emergency services has been drawn to the incident, but in view of the emergency situation, the state headquarters will not serve as a registration centre as planned, instead, the exercise will now take place in its ikpoba okha LGA office located at 16 customs road, off Benin/Auchi road, Benin city.
