Godwin Obaseki

The immediate past Governor of Edo State, Godwin Obaseki has mourned the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing him not just as a leader but as a statesman whose quiet strength and personal discipline stood him out.

The former Governor who communicated this in a statement noted that the former President embodied the kind of honesty and modesty that inspired both admiration and reflection.

‎Obaseki made reference to the 2020 governorship election year in Edo noting that during one of the most challenging moments of his political journey while being in the opposition, the former President demonstrated what it truly means to be a democrat when he stood on the side of fairness and justice by insisting that the federal government would not interfere with the electoral process in the State.

According to him, that singular act of statesmanship allowed the will of Edo people to prevail and helped protect the integrity of democracy.

He added that even at the height of power, Buhari remained grounded, never allowing the trappings of office to change who he was at his core, a man of integrity.
‎
Obaseki ‎affirmed that Nigeria has lost one of its most disciplined and principled leaders and while many will remember him for his fight against corruption and his austere lifestyle, he will remember him as a man who, when it truly mattered, chose country over party, and principle over politics.
