Nigeria has officially signed the Samoa Agreement at the Organisation of African, Caribbean, and Pacific States (OACPS) Secretariat in Brussels.
Minister of Budget and Economic Planning, Atiku Bagudu disclosed this at a reception organised by the European Union ahead of the 9th EU- Nigeria Business forum in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.
The Minister said Nigeria joined other OACPS member countries in committing to enhanced collaboration and cooperation on a global scale.
The Samoa Agreement, named after the Pacific Island nation where it was initially signed on November 15, 2023, aims to promote sustainable development, facilitate trade and investment opportunities, and strengthen unity among OACPS nations.
According to Bagudu, the agreement emphasises Nigeria’s strategic importance within the OACPS, recognizing the country’s significant economic and political influence both within the organization and on a broader scale.
The Minister stated that through collective action, signatories pledged to address crucial global challenges such as climate change, economic disparities, and social inequalities.
The European Union Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Samuela said the EU is set to expand its areas of cooperation with the Tinubu-led administration who is ready to make Nigeria an investment hub.
In alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) outlined in the 2030 Agenda, the Samoa Agreement prioritizes key areas like climate resilience, biodiversity conservation, and the promotion of fair trade and investment practices. Nigeria’s participation underscores its dedication to working alongside fellow member states to leverage their capabilities for mutual progress.
