A former president of Burundi, Piere Buyoya has died in Paris, after being flown there due to complications from coronavirus.
Buyoya, who until three weeks ago, was Africa Union Special Envoy to Mali and the Sahel Region, working out of Bamako, resigned to “focus on clearing his name” following allegations that he was involved in the assassination of his successor, after his first time as president of the East African country.
The former army officer was the second longest-serving Burundian president. He led a coup in 1987, and was in charge till 1993, and is credited with introducing participatory democracy to the country that year.

He returned to power three years later, as the country slid into civil war, following the assassination of the man he handed over power , who had spent barely four months in office.
The country’s immediate past president, Pierre Nkurunziza died, reportedly also of complications from coronavirus in June this year.
