A former Minister of Commerce and Industries during the military regime of Major General Muhammadu Buhari and the
First Vice-Chancellor (VC) of Bayero University, Kano (BUK) Mahmud Muhammad Tukur, is dead.
Mahmud Tukur, died in the early hours of Friday in Abuja, after a brief illness.
Dr Mahmud Muhammad Tukur, born in 1939 in Yola, Adamawa state was a prominent scholar of worldwide fame.
In the course of his academic career he was the Director of the Institute of Administration,A.B.U., Zaria and the first Vice Chancellor of Bayero University,Kano (BUK)
Dr Mahmud Tukur was a recipient of the Elizabeth Morris Memorial Prize for graduating First class and obtaining a First Degree in International Affairs and Political science at the University of Wales.
He also had a Master degree in Public International Affairs at the University of Pittsburgh and a PhD. in Public Management at the Ahmadu Bello University,Zaria. He also studied at Northwestern and Oxford Universities, Mahmud was a distinguished Fulbright-Hays Fellow, Senior I .U.C. Fellow and Associate Member of St. Anthony’s College, Oxford (1974).
Until his death he was the director of Cadbury, Nigeria plc, and also the coordinator of Policy Analysis Limited.Mahmud authored many books and a great number of academic works especially in his respected field of studies, prominent among the books he authored is LEADERSHIP AND GOVERNANCE IN NIGERIA :The Relevance of Values (1999)
He is survived by three wives, nine children and many distinguished brothers,prominent among his brothers are a global industrialist and a world renowned, business Mogul,Alhaji Bamanga Muhammad Tukur,the former Governor of the defunct Gongola state,one time Minister of Industries and former people’s Democratic Party(PDP) Chairman and another prominent business mogul and an industrialist,Alhaji Bashir Muhammad Tukur.
