Former President and others express worry over rising cases of substance abuse in Nigeria

Former president, Olusegun Obasanjo and some medical experts have raised concerns over latest statistics indicating that 14.3 million Nigerians have been involved in one form of substance abuse in the last six months.

The concerns were expressed at a workshop on drug use at the Olusegun Obasanjo presidential library in Abeokuta where speakers revealed that primary school students are now involved in the menace of drug abuse according to statistics. 

Experts on mental health and Obasanjo who were key speakers at the workshop which focused on movement against drug abuse, advised citizens particularly young persons against illicit drug usage.

Former President Obasanjo in his remarks advised addicts to seek help early.

Kunle Adesina Called on Federal and State governments to ensure strict application of the law against drug cartels.

In a bid to tackle the menace of illicit drug trafficking in the country, the National Assembly only recently amended the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency Act, prescribing life imprisonment for drug offenders and traffickers.
