The Former Executive Secretary of National Health Insurance Scheme NHIS, Professor Usman Yusuf, has pleaded not guilty to a five-count amended charge of fraud allegations and misconduct, preferred against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, before a high court in Kuje, in the Federal Capital Territory.

The trial judge, Justice Chinyere Nwecheonwu, ordered that Yusuf be remanded in Kuje correctional Center pending the hearing of his bail application.

His lawyer had requested that he be kept with the EFCC pending the hearing of his bail application but the court refused, noting that once the defendant was arraigned, he ceased to be in the custody of the EFCC.

The court however adjourned the case to February 12, 2025 to rule on his bail application.

The former NHIS Executive Secretary is accused of using his office to confer undue advantages to himself between 2016 and 2017.

He is also accused of awarding contracts without following the due procurement process, while in office.
