The Federal Government has flagged off the movement of containers out of the Apapa Port Terminal in Lagos.

The minister of transportation, Saidu Alkali who inaugurated the first Cargo Movement from Lagos to Ibadan on Tuesday at the Apapa port complex during his first official tour of the rail corridor said
Three coaches of thirty wagons are parts of the plans to decongest the Apapa seaport.

The Minister added that the freight train would operate on a single track temporarily pending when the customs scanner would be removed, disclosing that the Ministry is interfacing with the Customs to remove the scanner.

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) says it would start operations with three coaches per day even as its managing director noting that, the corporation had the capacity to scale up the numbers.

The flag off of freight train is coming two years after the project was inaugurated by former President Muhammadu Buhari.

The 157-km long railway line with an extension to the Apapa Ports in Lagos has been largely under-utilised due to some impediments which had stalled the complete linkage of the track to the Apapa Port quay.
