Lagos State High Court sitting in Ikeja, Monday, has ordered the remand of former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, Godwin Emefiele in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC following fresh charges filed against him.
Emefiele and his co-defendant, Henry Omoile who was remanded at the Ikoyi Custodial Centre are standing trial over alleged abuse of power and allocation of foreign exchange worth billions of dollars.
Counsel for the defendants, Lebi Lawal who had filed two bail applications for the accused persons, prayed the court to grant Emefiele bail on self recognition, adding that the defendant had manifested himself not to be a flight risk.
The defendants who took their pleas before Justice Rahmon Oshodi had pleaded not guilty to the 26-count charge preferred against them by the EFCC.
According to the charge sheet, filed by Rotimi Oyedepo SAN, marked ID/23787c/2024 and dated April 3, the EFCC alleged that the first defendant abused his office as the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria between 2020 and 2023.
The offences contravene sections 73, 65 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos, 2015, Section 8, 10 and 19 of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act, 2000 and Section 328 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos 2011.
