The Coalition of Northern Youth for Good Governance has urged the Federal Government to facilitate the establishment of more local refineries to address fuel scarcity and prioritise the supply of crude oil to local refineries in Nigeria.
The chairman of the youths coalition group, Jabir Aminu, made the call at a news conference in Kaduna.
He described private refineries as crucial for reducing Nigeria’s dependency on imported refined products, adding that they are vital for national development and economic independence.
The coalition appealed to the Federal Government to urgently investigate the reasons behind the non-supply of crude oil to refineries like Aliko Dangote’s, rather than forcing them to import from foreign countries.
The coalition believes that the commissioning of the $20 billion Dangote Refinery, with a refining capacity of 650,000 barrels per day (BPD) in 2023, has given a significant boost to the country’s oil sector. This development is expected to reduce Nigeria’s reliance on imported fuel and create employment opportunities for the nation’s burgeoning population.
