The first female Vice Chancellor of the University of Calabar, Unical, Professor Florence Obi, has called on government at all levels to invoke and implement the laws against Gender Based Violence, GBV, in order to ensure that it is tackled and properly addressed in the country.
Speaking during a media briefing with journalists on the occasion of her third anniversary in office and the 16 days activism against GBV, Professor Obi noted that some people still treat her differently, as she was a female Vice Chancellor.
The Unical VC describes her three years in office as both fulfilling and challenging, stressing that she has had to work twice harder as a female Vice Chancellor to prove that she deserved the position.
While also wading into the news of the federal government considering the reintroduction of the policy of universities full autonomy aimed at providing a platform for institutions to develop at their own pace, Professor Obi noted that the nation’s public universities were poorly funded as at now and might find it hard to cope financially without the support of government.
She however asserted that if implemented, the burden will be on students and their parents.
Professor Florence Obi who took over as the 11th Vice Chancellor of Unical and the first female Vice Chancellor to head the institution in 45 years on December 1st 2020 says her achievements over the past three years included prompt mobilization of students for the National Youth Service Corps, improved teaching and learning, and accreditation of about six departments by the National Universities Council, NUC, amongst others.
