The wife of Abia State governor, Priscilla Otti has called on legal institutions and security agencies to swiftly implement laws and measures to protect women and girls from gender-based violence.
The governor’s wife made the call when she visited a victim of domestic violence, Amarachi Lawrence at the Federal Medical Centre Umuahia, the Abia state capital.
Amarachi Lawrence, a native of Atta Emede Ibeku in Umuahia North LGA of Abia State, was physical abused by her husband, Lawrence Chukwunyere, who inflicted severe injuries on her and damaging her two eyes apparently in an attempt to pluck them out.
The scary machete cuts and genital mutilation on Amarachi are also evidence of a romance gone bad.
The governor’s wife on learning about the incident promptly set up a team to visit Amarachi in the hospital with a view to assessing her condition and finding ways to assist.
An emotional Priscilla Otti while condemning the dastardly act advised government to put in place stringent punitive measures to deal with perpetrators of domestic violence in Nigeria.
She also appealed to government and good spirited Nigerians to support Amarachi’s treatment to save her life.
The director of nursing services at the Federal Medical Cenre, Onyemaobi Aisha says Amarachi is receiving treatment but she cannot ascertain if the victim will be able to see with her eyes again.
