The Senate through its Committee on Diaspora and Non-Governmental Organisations has reacted to a viral video showing a protest in Ghana where some individuals called for Nigerians to be deported over claims that their behavior conflicts with local norms.
In a statement issued by the Committee Chairman, Senator Bassey Aniekan, the Senate condemned the growing hostility towards Nigerians in Ghana, especially the blanket labeling of Nigerians as criminals. The Committee described Nigerians as generally hardworking, law-abiding, and positive contributors to society, while acknowledging that, like any population, a few may fall short of expected conduct.
Highlighting the historical ties between Ghana and Nigeria, the Committee chairman emphasized the importance of maintaining brotherly relations under the framework of ECOWAS and regional integration. Senator Bassey stressed that dialogue remains the most effective tool for resolving tensions.
The lawmaker urged Nigerians in Ghana to remain calm, exercise restraint, and avoid any form of provocation or reprisal, assuring that the matter is being addressed diplomatically. He confirmed that the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Ojukwu, is actively engaging Ghanaian authorities on the issue.

The Committee also warned against the spread of misinformation and urged the public to disregard unverified social media videos claiming that Nigerian-owned businesses are being destroyed in Ghana, as no evidence currently supports such claims.
Commending the efforts of both the Nigerian and Ghanaian High Commissioners, the Senate Committee noted that diplomatic channels are being utilized to defuse tensions and restore calm.
