Governor Ahmed Aliyu of Sokoto State, Northwest Nigeria has received the State’s Sports contingents who won various trophies and medals at different sporting competitions held across the country.
At a reception organized in honour of the Sportsmen and women, Governor Aliyu commended the athletes and players for their commitment, dedication, and resilience, which led to their remarkable achievements in the competitions they participated in.
He assured them of his administration’s continued support toward ensuring improved performance in future engagements.
“You have made us proud, and the State is happy with your performance. Please keep the flag flying,” he said.
Governor Aliyu also announced the donation of a 36-seater bus to Sokoto United Football Club as part of efforts to address mobility challenges faced by the team.
“As you are aware, sports has now become a major employer of labour across the globe. Therefore, my administration will continue to encourage sporting activities in the State,” he pledged.

The Governor called on wealthy individuals and stakeholders within the State to invest in sports development in order to identify and nurture more talented footballers and athletes across communities.
He commended the Ministry of Youth and Sports, as well as the management of Sokoto United FC, Rima Strikers, and Rima Queens, for providing the athletes with the necessary skills and training, urging them to maintain the momentum.
The State Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Mustafa Muhammad Kofar Marke, highlighted the achievements recorded by the teams. He said Rima Strikers clinched first position at the U-12 to U-15 Handball Championship held in Asaba, Delta State, while Rima Queens finished in second place.
He noted that during the Ardova Premier Games in Lagos, Rima Strikers secured second position while Rima Queens finished in third place.
At the 2025 National Sports Festival in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Rima Handball Queens won a silver medal, the State’s men’s wrestling team also won a silver medal, while a bronze medal was recorded in shooting. At the National Youth Games in Asaba, Delta State, the Sokoto wrestling team clinched a silver medal.
The Commissioner appealed to Governor Aliyu to consider reviewing players’ allowances, providing sports kits and equipment to clubs across the State, renovating Giginya Stadium, and providing vehicles to ease the movement of players and coaches, especially during national competitions.
Highlight of the event included the presentation of trophies and medals won by the different teams and athletes to Governor Aliyu, who later formally handed over the 36-seater bus to Sokoto United Football Club.
