Gov. Diri signs Customary Court Bill 2022, two others into Law

The Bayelsa state government has signed into law, a bill designed to protect the rights and responsibilities of indigenous peoples and local communities as well as the female gender in cases of loss of their husbands.

Governor Diri while appending his signature to the the Document which is tagged “Customary Court Law 2022”, at the weekly executive council meeting, said irrespective of the Ijaw culture, the law will address cultural stereotypes against the feminine gender in Bayelsa state.

This is coming as the public outcry on gender imbalance, cultural patterns and traditional practices against women gradually gain more grounds

At the 70th Bayelsa state executive council meeting, among three bills presented to Governor Douye Diri for assent by the leadership of the State House of Assembly was the Customary Court bill, which has been on the floor of the house since June 2, 2020.

Other bills signed into law by the Governor at the Exco meeting included, the Customary Court of Appeal Amendment Bill 2022, and the Multi-door Court House Bill 2022.

The governor lauded the peaceful and harmonious relationship existing between the executive and the legislators towards achieving a better Bayelsa for the benefit of all.
