Despite the political upheaval in Rivers State, Journalists operating in the troubled State have remained firm and balanced in their News reportage without taking sides among the contending political actors.
This was the submission of the Rivers State Governor, Sim Fubara during the Nigerian Union of Journalists Press Week Awards Night in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital
The NUJ Awards Night was put together to honour founding fathers, veterans and active practicing Journalists who have excelled and made impacts in the pen fraternity.
In recognition of their selfless sacrifices through News reportage, and holding government accountable to the people, Journalists in their various fields were honoured for their commitment and upholding the ethical standards of the profession.
Rivers State Governor Sim Fubara who was awarded the Most Press Friendly Governor, commended practicing Journalists in the State for their dedication and professionalism in the discharge of their duties, especially in the reportage of the lingering political crisis in the State.
The Awards Night also saw the presentation of meritorious Service Awards to the first Rivers State Council NUJ Chairman, Chief Wofuru Oparaolu and other veterans who have contributed to the wellbeing and development of the society through their pieces of writing.
AIT’s Port Harcourt Centre Political Correspondent, Abaje Osekwe was among the recipients of award in the Reporters category.
Some of the award recipients say they felt fulfilled that their sacrifices, dedication and commitment in bringing the story to the people were noticed and appreciated as that will spur them to do more.
Notable dignitaries including two former Commissioners for Information in Rivers State, Paulinus Nsirim and Ibim Seminatary who graced the occasion, were equally among the Awards recipients.
