In what has been a historic day for Enugu, the capital city of Enugu State, South East Nigeria, this Saturday hosted its very first international marathon.

The event, which featured both a 42-kilometre and 10-kilometre race, attracted runners from across Nigeria and beyond, with high hopes for future editions.

The race kicked off at about 6:30 am local time Nigeria, with the 42-kilometre marathon starting at the Enugu ShopRite arena.

Hours later, hundreds of participants in the 10‑kilometre event began their journey on Mgbemene Street in Coal Camp, including the Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah and a host of notable figures.

Both races navigated through the heart of the city, passing landmarks, markets and residential neighbourhoods, before terminating at the finish line in Okpara Square.

Ken Koros of Kenya claimed victory in the men’s full marathon, completing the race in 2 hours, 21 minutes while Ezekiel Gyang from Plateau State was the first Nigerian to finish, taking 6th place overall.

In the women’s category, Kenya’s Shauline Chepkirui emerged as the winner, crossing the line in 2 hours, 44 minutes.

In the 10‑kilometre fun run, the Governor completed the course in just under one hour, much to the delight of spectators.
