Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom has warned residents in the state to always obtain approval from the relevant authorities before erecting structures either for residential or commercial purposes.
Governor Ortom who gave the warning while on inspection of the damage done by flooding after a recent downpour in the state capital Makurdi said that government would henceforth demolish any building along the waterways without compensation.
Despite early warnings of the impending flood disaster,
Areas like Wurukum, Gboko road, Achusa, BIPC quarters, Wadata, Ishaya Bakut road and parts of judges’ quarters were submerged with property destroyed.
The Benue Governor then appealed to the federal government to facilitate the dredging of the river Benue to mitigate the annual threat.
