Enugu State has now joined the trillion-naira annual budget league, as Governor Peter Mbah on Tuesday presented a ₦1.62 trillion budget proposal for the 2026 fiscal year before the State House of Assembly.
The figure represents a 66.5% increase over the 2025 budget.
Enugu State, Governor, Peter Mbah told the lawmakers that 2026 will be the year the State moves from laying foundations to scaling transformation across all sectors.
The proposed ₦1.62 trillion budget is the largest in the State’s fiscal history.
For context, the Enugu State House of Assembly approved about ₦971 billion for 2025 — a significantly smaller size, but the Governor said his administration will close the year strong, having implemented about 83% of that budget.
A breakdown of projected revenue for 2026 shows that ₦870 billion is expected from Internally Generated Revenue (IGR),₦387 billion from FAAC,and ₦329 billion from capital receipts.
The spending plan allocates 80% to capital expenditure and 20% to recurrent needs — a structure the Governor said reflects the scale of development ahead.
On sectoral allocations: For the second consecutive year, over 30% of the budget goes to education, more than 15% is earmarked for housing, while the health sector receives 10% of the total budget estimate.
Massive spending is also expected in infrastructure, with over 1,000 roads billed for construction or rehabilitation, as well as transportation, where the State plans to add 14 more aircrafts to the Enugu Air fleet.
Tagged the “Budget of Renewed Momentum,” Governor Mbah described the proposal as ambitious, but responsible; a reach he believes the State has the capacity to achieve.
