Cross River State Governor Bassey Otu has approved a new minimum wage of ₦70,000 for state workers, effective from December 1st, 2024.
The agreement, reached after a meeting with organized labour, includes consequential adjustments across all levels.
The signing of the new minimum wage follows the governor’s earlier establishment of a Joint Public Service Negotiating and Implementation Committee in November, to facilitate discussions on implementing the national minimum wage.
At the meeting, Governor Otu appealed to workers to suspend their participation in the strike scheduled for December 2nd, emphasizing his administration’s commitment to prioritizing their welfare.
Speaking after the signing, the state Chairman of Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Gregory Olayi, commended the governor for honoring the agreement, describing it as a step toward a harmonious working relationship.
Governor Otu had earlier raised the minimum wage from ₦30,000 to ₦40,000 in May during the Workers’ Day celebration, making this new adjustment another milestone in his administration’s “People First” agenda.
