Nigeria’s Thirty Six State Governors have endorsed reforms requiring the direct remittance of revenue from oil and gas into the Federation account.
A statement from the secretariat of the Nigerian Governors Forum, the umbrella body of State Governors and signed by the Director, Media and Strategic Communications Yunusa Abdullahi says the forum’s interest lies In the extent to which reforms enhance the transparency, predictability and constitutional alignment of Federation account inflows across all tiers of government.
President Bola Tinubu had on 13th February 2026, issued an Executive Order ordering direct remittance of oil and gas revenues to the Federation Account.
Anchored on Section 44(3) of the Constitution, which vests ownership and control of mineral resources in the Federal Government, the President signed the order pursuant to Section 5 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).
The Governors noted that reforms which strengthen fiscal coherence and reinforce the constitutional framework underpinning resource ownership ultimately benefit the entire federation.
