Some Civil society groups and Environmental Rights Action have called on the Federal Government to reorganize and completely overhaul the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project, HYPREP, in order to ensure that it is able to deliver a good cleanup of Ogoni land.
They made this known during a press briefing in Port Harcourt.
The civil society organisations, which have been in the forefront at ensuring that the cleanup exercise, is executed in line with international best practices, have again raised alarm over the lack of capacity on HYPREP to deliver on the project.
The failure of HYPREP to provide water for the people of Ogoni as recommended by the UNEP report is another major source of concern for the Environmental Rights Action.
According to the environmental rights organization, for the cleanup project to succeed, the Federal Government should urgently reorganize and completely overhaul HYPREP to ensure optimum results.

It observed that for the Ogoni cleanup project to be conducted in a transparent and accountable manner, it is imperative for HYPREP to come up with a work and implementation plan.
