There has been an attempted coup in Guinea Bissau, with the whereabouts of President Umaro Embalo unknown.
Soldiers had reportedly attacked a government building hosting a government meeting, and their is uneasy calm in the capital, Bissau.
The 49 – year old former Army officer is just about two years in office.
He has been making strides to curb corruption in public life, and has sacked many top military officers found involved in the drugs trade, as Guinea Bissau is a transit point for narcotics trade.
In the meantime, the West African subregiional body, ECOWAS has reacted to the situation in the country of just under two million people.
In a three- paragragh statement, ECOWAS said it is following the situation in Guinea Bissau, and condemns the attempted coup d’état.

The sub-regional body says it will hold the Guinea Bissau military responsible for the physical wellbeing of President EMBALO and the members of his government, and called on the military to return to the barracks.
As the situation in Guinea Bissau continues to unravel, this is the fifth attempted coup in West Africa.
Three of these coups have been successful in Mali, Guinea and, only 9 days ago, in Burkina Faso.
ECOWAS has imposed sanctions on two of these countries and only on Friday threatened the Burkinabe Junta with sanctions similar to those slammed on Mail and Guinea.
