Reports from Abakaliki say another traditional ruler has been gruesomely murdered by gunmen in Ebonyi State, barely a month after a similar incident.

The traditional ruler of Ishinkwo community in Onicha Local Government Area of the State, Eze Josephat Ikegwu, was reportedly attacked by his assailants on the night of April 1 at his residence.

Locals told AIT.live that the incident happened at about 10:30pm when the heavily armed men stormed the residence and opened fire on the apartment of the monarch, shooting him through the window of his bedroom, and killing him instantly.

His wife and other family members were unhurt in what appeared to be a well planned attack that lasted for minutes.

Ebonyi State Government has issued a strongly worded statement condemning the killing of Eze Josephat Ikegwu. It said “this tragic and barbaric act is not only an attack on our revered traditional institutions, but a direct assault on the peace, and collective conscience of Ebonyi State.”

Governor Francis Nwifuru has therefore directed the state joint security architecture to immediately unravel the circumstances surrounding the murder of the traditional ruler.

Meanwhile, the Ebonyi State Police Command Public Relations Officer, SP Joshua Ukandu, while confirming the incident to AIT.live says investigation has been launched and operatives are on the trail of the suspected assailants.

The latest killing is coming on the heels of last month’s gunmen kidnap and killing of the traditional ruler of Ndufu-Alike Ikwo, Eze Francis Igwe who was the father to the immediate past deputy governor of the State.
