Mike Ejeagha, popularly called “Gentleman Mike Ejeagha,” died on Friday night at a hospital in Enugu after a long illness. His son, Emma Ejeagha, confirmed the news.
The Gwogwogwo singer, was one of the most respected voices in Nigerian highlife music, especially in the 1980s and he stood out for the way he used Igbo folklore and proverbs to tell stories through music.
His songs did not just entertain, they taught life lessons and helped preserve Igbo culture.
Just last year, in 2024, one of his old songs from 1983 titled, “Ka Esi Le Onye Isi Oche”, became popular again when it inspired a viral dance trend on social media called the “Gwo Gwo Gwo challenge.”

The song’s popularity brought him back into the spotlight, especially among younger people, both in Nigeria and on the international scenes.
In recognition of his contributions to culture and music, the Enugu State Government named the street where his home was rebuilt after him.
Mike Ejeagha was born on April 4, 1930, in Imezi Owa, Ezeagu Local Government Area of Enugu State. He leaves behind, a legacy of music, culture, and wisdom that will continue to live on.
