Haiti’s President, Jovenel Moïse, has been killed in an attack on his official residence in the country’s capital, Port-au-Prince.
Interim prime minister, Claude Joseph who confirmed the killing said the president’s residence was stormed by unidentified armed men. The president’s wife is also reported to have been injured in the attack.
Meanwhile, “all measures had been taken to guarantee to the continuance of the state” according to the Interim Prime Minister.
The late President had been in power since February 2017, after his predecessor, Michel Martelly stepped down. He had a controversial tenure facing allegations of corruption amid series of often violent anti-government streets protests.

There were widespread protests in the capital and other cities earlier this year, as people demanded his resignation.
Haiti’s opposition said that Moïse’s 5-year term should have ended on February 7, 2021, but he insisted he had one more year to serve as he did not take office until 2017.
The year-long delay was caused by allegations of electoral fraud which eventually saw the result of the 2015 election being annulled and fresh polls being held, which he won.
