Hoodlums steal Covid-19 testing machines in Cross River State

Except there is an urgent intervention by relevant authorities, there may be an upsurge of Covid-19 and other related diseases cases in Cross River State as equipment used for testing at the Infectious Diseases Hospital, IDH in the state capital, Calabar have been stolen by hoodlums.

The machines which include Gene Xpert and Abbott equipments were destroyed by the hoodlums who attacked the Infectious Disease Hospital’s laboratory located at Edgerly Road In Calabar.

Speaking during a visit to the hospital and other vandalised health cluster offices, Commissioner for Health, Dr. Betta Edu, who described the situation as unfortunate, called on the Federal Government and international donors to assist Cross River at this trying time.

Edu said the testing centre at the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, though small will be used pending when the State activates the destroyed centre.

Also inspected by the Commissioner and her team were the World Health Organisation’s operational vehicles and office equipment vandalised by the hoodlums in Calabar.
