Nigeria’s House of Representatives Committee on Public Petitions has invited the Governor of Zamfara State, Dauda Lawal and that of Benue State, Hyacinth Alia along with the leadership of their State Houses of Assembly to appear before it on Thursday, May 8.

This development, according to the committee, is to enable the state governors to explain why the functions of the respective state assemblies should not be taken over by the House of Representatives.

The decision follows a petition by a civil rights organisation, Guardians of Democracy and Rule of Law asking the House to take over the functions of the two Houses of Assembly as a result of unresolved disagreements among members of the legislative houses in both states.

The summons, personally signed by the Committee Chairman, Mike Etaba, noted that the invited parties are already aware of the facts of the case explaining that the role of the House of Representatives is to ensure that the rule of law is upheld at all times.

Etaba maintained that the meeting will afford parties an opportunity to state their cases clearly for the understanding of lawmakers and Nigerians, insisting that anarchy would never be given any space in the country’s political space.
