Nigeria’s House of Representatives has mandated the Inspector General of Police to immediately take over the investigation of corps members abducted by bandits on their way to their place of primary assignment

The House resolution followed a motion of urgent public importance by Unyime Idem from Akwa Ibom State who expressed worry that the frequent and continuous occurrence of kidnapping targeted at innocent corps members poses significant security concerns, threatens the mandate of the NYSC and, erodes public trust and confidence in the government’s ability to protect its citizens.

Idem told his colleagues that there is an urgent need to institute a plan of action to forestall any more occurrences, restore confidence in the country’s national security system and preserve Nigeria’s national unity.

The lawmaker described the ugly development as one too many drawing the House attention to two incidents involving Miss Imaobong Samuel abducted alongside 11 others on her way to her place of primary assignment in Kogi State and another case pending conclusive investigation where eight corps members from Akwa Ibom State were abducted by gunmen in Zamfara State with demand of ransom of different sums.

The House called on the Nigerian Police Force to collaborate with other relevant security agencies, including the Department of State Services and Nigerian Army, to ensure a coordinated and effective response to the rising security threat targeted at Corp members and innocent citizens.
