Nigeria’s House of Representatives has directed Multichoice Group, owners of Dstv and Gotv, to suspend its announced increase in subscription prices in the country pending an investigation by its committee on commerce

The House in a motion by Esosa Iyawe representing Oredo Federal constituency of Edo State, mandated the committee to commence a four weeks investigation into the increase in subscription by multichoice with a view to ensuring implementation of cost-effective policies in the pay-Tv sector for consumers in Nigeria

Sponsor of the motion, Esosa Iyawe, expressed dissatisfaction with the rate of subscription increase by multichoice Nigeria, noting that between May 2024 and February this year, the company has increased subscription prices twice

The lawmaker told his colleagues that due to the dominant position of multichoice pay-Tv service in Nigeria, subscription price increases by the company always have a widespread impact on Nigerians and put consumers under undue pressure

He lamented the lack of a viable competition in the pay-Tv sector in the country expressing concern that the last increase in May 2024 sparked public outrage with many Nigerians who were already dealing with rising costs of living forced to ditch their decoders.

The House directed the committee on commerce to ensure the matter is thoroughly investigated and present its report within four weeks for further legislative action
