After the conclusion of zonal hearings on constitution review across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, the House of Representatives public hearing has now shifted to the Federal Capital Territory.

The hearing, which is taking place at the Transcorp Hilton, will give stakeholders drawn from all sectors of the Nigerian economy an opportunity to provide input into pressing issues slated for amendment.

Ahead of its December 2025 deadline, the committee, headed by House Deputy Speaker, Benjamin Kalu, along with representatives from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory are running against time to conclude this assignment and present a report before the National Assembly leadership for consideration.

With over 87 key priority bills, including state policing, special seats for women, local government autonomy, state creation, and devolution of powers, among others, today’s hearing is expected to come up with key recommendations that will form part of the House debate upon resumption.

Upon inauguration, the House Committee promised to deliver a constitution that strengthens Nigeria’s democracy, promotes inclusive governance, enhances security, ensures fiscal
responsibility, and aligns with global best practices in constitutional design.

But these objectives set out by the committee can only be achieved with the cooperation of the State Houses of Assembly, whose concurrence is required for the constitution amendment process, to build consensus and expedite adoption.

The presentations of the various Houses of Assembly representatives at the national public hearing today, alongside inputs of other stakeholders, will play a key role in determining the success of the 10th Assembly’s attempt at amending the 1999 constitution
