The Minority Caucus in Nigeria’s House of Representatives has condemned the hike in petrol pump price by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPCL describing it as ill-timed and insensitive.

A statement by the Leader of the Caucus, Kingsley Chinda says increasing pump price at a time the country is grappling with unprecedented economic challenges will impact the cost of transportation, food, and other essential goods and services which will ultimately erode the already fragile purchasing power of millions of citizens and push more families into poverty.

The statement berated the NNPCL for taking the decision without consultation with the National Assembly and stakeholders, calling on the Federal Government to prioritise the rehabilitation and upgrading of local refineries, curb corruption within the petroleum sector, and ensure that subsidies genuinely benefit the masses rather than a few privileged individuals.

The Minority Caucus says they stand with the Nigerian people in rejecting the petrol price hike promising to continue advocating for policies that prioritise the welfare and well-being of all citizens. The Caucus is also asking the government to listen to the voice of the people, and take immediate steps to alleviate their suffering rather than aggravate it.
