HOUSE OF REPS 1045x693 1

Nigeria’s House of Representatives committee on Renewable Energy has invited contractors handling renewable energy projects under the Rural Electrification Agency Energising Education Programme (EEP) Phases I–III to appear before lawmakers as part of an ongoing probe into the implementation of green energy initiatives across federal institutions.

The directive follows a resolution of the House adopted at plenary on 22nd October, 2025, mandating a review of the placement and execution of renewable energy projects in Ministries, Departments, and Agencies.

In a letter to the agency, the committee requested that all contractors engaged in the scheme present themselves before lawmakers with full project documentation, including contract awards, executed agreements, engineering drawings, feasibility studies, project status reports, commissioning records, and maintenance agreements.

The statement noted that projects under review include solar hybrid installations in several federal universities and teaching hospitals nationwide, which has raised concern among stakeholders in the tertiary education sector

Chairman of the Committee, Afam Ogene, explained that the hearing aims to ensure compliance with due process, verify project quality, and assess the sustainability of installations.

While expressing concerns about the frequent malfunctioning of solar-powered streetlights, the committee chairman highlighted the need to prevent substandard implementation and economic wastage.

House Speaker, Tajudeen Abbas, represented at the hearing by the House Deputy Leader Ibrahim Halims, described the inquiry as a crucial parliamentary assignment aimed at strengthening transparency and institutional integrity.

Abbas highlighted the House of Representatives legislative focus, which includes integrating renewable energy into Nigeria’s electricity mix and promoting sustainable development.

The investigative hearing is expected to identify underperforming projects, and make recommendations that would help improve Nigeria’s renewable energy sector.
