The National Assembly has announced an extraordinary sitting scheduled for Tuesday, 17th February 2026, to consider urgent amendments to the Electoral Act.
The notice, issued by Professor Jake Dan-Azumi, Chief of Staff to the Speaker, informed Honourable Members that the special session will focus on the Electoral Act (Repeal and Re-Enactment) Bill earlier passed by the House.
This development follows the release of the 2027 General Election timetable by the Independent National Electoral Commission, which outlined proposed dates for the Presidential and National Assembly elections. Lawmakers have observed that the scheduled dates coincide with the Ramadan period, a factor believed could significantly affect voter participation across parts of the country.
As a result, the House is set to undertake a recision and recommittal of the bill. Central to the review is a proposed adjustment of the statutory notice period required for elections by INEC — reducing it from 360 days to 300 days.

Lawmakers say the change is intended to provide greater flexibility in election scheduling and ensure alignment with prevailing national considerations.
According to the notice, all legislative processes concerning the bill are expected to be concluded within the same day. This is to allow Members to proceed with other political engagements, including the forthcoming ward congresses of the All Progressives Congress.
The leadership of the House has described the matter as one of constitutional and national importance, strongly urging all Honourable Members to prioritise attendance at the extraordinary sitting.
We will continue to monitor developments from the National Assembly and bring you updates as they unfold.
