Nigeria’s House of Representatives has constituted a conference committee on the Electoral Act Amendment Bill, in accordance with legislative procedure, towards harmonising areas of difference between the versions of the bill passed by both chambers of the National Assembly.
A statement by the Clerk to the House, Yahaya Danzaria, conveying the directive of the leadership shows that the membership of the committee is composed of the following members:
Adebayo Balogun (APC) – Chairman
Fred Agbedi (PDP) – Member
Sada Soli (APC) – Member
Ahmadu Jaha (APC) – Member
Iduma Igariwey (PDP) – Member
Saidu Abdullahi (APC) – Member
Zainab Gimba (APC) – Member
House Spokesperson and Chairman Committee on Media and Public Affairs, Akin Rotimi Jnr, in a separate statement, reiterated the commitment of the House to advancing electoral reforms that strengthen transparency, credibility, and public confidence in Nigeria’s democratic process.
The committee is expected to conclude this assignment within one week.
The Senate had earlier constituted a conference committee to work with the House to harmonise the different versions of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill passed by both chambers.
Chairman of the Senate Committee on Electoral Matters, Simon Lalong will serve as Chairman of the Senate conference committee.
Other members include the Senate Chief Whip, Tahir Monguno and Chairman of the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Adeniyi Adegbomire.
Additional members are Senators Adamu Aliero from North-West, Orji Uzor Kalu from South-East, Abba Moro from North-Central, Asuquo Ekpenyong from South-South, Aminu Abbas from North-East, and Tokunbo Abiru from South-West.
A major point of divergence to be resolved is Clause 60 of the bill, where the House of Representatives adopted mandatory electronic transmission of election results, while the Senate had rejected the provision.
