The Tinubu administration has been asked to give priority to government agencies handling treatment of infectious diseases in various health facilities across the country as neglect of the affected institutions may lead to high infection rates and outbreak of deadly diseases.
Chairman of the House Committee on Infectious Diseases, Amobi Ogah, who made this call at the 2025 budget performance appraisal and 2026 budget defence of government agencies under the committee on Thursday, assured Nigerians that the National Assembly will ensure that the 2026 budget proposals of the health institutions are fully implemented unlike the unforrtunate poor releases experienced in the 2025 fiscal year.
Ogah acknowledged that 2025 was a challenging year but expressed hope that the executive will address all issues that left most agencies of government without adequate funding in the 2025 budget cycle for the benefit of Nigerians.
The committee chairman appealed to President Bola Tinubu to step up efforts in delivering on his campaign promises, insisting that government must make efforts to meet the expectations of citizens at all times especially in the health sector where most citizens depend on public institutions for affordable healthcare services.
Agencies present at the budget defence include the National Agency for the Control of AIDS (NACA), National Arbovirus and Vector Research Centre and Principal, and the National Tuberculosis and Leprosy Training Centre.
