Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, wants the Nigerian government to speed up the Ogoni clean-up exercise and the entire Niger delta in the interest of the people who have suffered environmental pollution for decades

Falana, who said this during the 30th memorial lecture of late Ken Sarowiwa and eight others, in Port Harcourt, the rivers State capital, also reminded the Nigerian authorities to give priority to the provision of social amenities and job creation for the people of ogoni and the entire Niger Delta Region due to the enormous resources derived from the region.

The memorial lecture in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, with the theme, “Ken Sarowiwa, The man, His Legacies, Struggles and challenges” is part of activities to commemorate the 30-year anniversary of the murder of Ken sarowiwa and eight others by the military junta led then by the late general Sani Abacha for fighting for the rights of their people and the emancipation of the Niger delta region.

In his lecture, human rights lawyer and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana, said Ken sarowiwa was unjustly murdered for a crime he knew nothing about and therefore called on the Nigeria government to do the needful to quicken the healing of old wounds among the people of Ogoniland.

Falana also urged the Rivers state government to enact a law that would ensure special allocation to oil producing areas from the 13 per cent derivation fund from the Federal Government.
