Human Rights Violation: NHRC Receives 305,300 Complaints In Sept. 2024

The Executive Secretary Of The National Human Rights Commission, Anthony Ojukwu has expressed concern over the increase in the number of human rights violation complaints across the country especially in the aftermath of the #endbadgovernance protests held in August And October 2024.

Ojukwu, who was represented by the Director Of Legal Services And Enforcement Of The Commission, Rabi Anwar, decried the excessive use of force and tear gas by the Nigerian police force on protesters, noting that such actions are violations of the fundamental rights of Nigerian citizens.

Figures released in the September 2024 dashboard report reveal that the commission received over three hundred thousand alleged human rights violation complaints.

Ojukwu further emphasized the need to seek lasting solutions to the rising human rights violations complaints in Nigeria and urged the media to amplify the voices of the vulnerable.

While lamenting the tragic loss of lives due to road accidents, the Commission called on the Government and the Federal Road Safety Corps to address the menace and ensure the safety of motorists in Nigeria.

In another development, the National Human Rights Commission has reiterated its commitment towards protecting the rights of persons with disabilities in the country by ensuring strict disciplinary measures is meted on individuals and organizations who discriminate against them.

The Executive Secretary Of The Commission, Tony Ojukwu who was represented by the Director Of Legal Services, Hauwa Rabiu gave this charge at the opening of a 2- day workshop aimed at highlighting the roles of relevant stakeholders in the implementation and promotion of the human rights of persons with disabilities.

Other speakers at the workshop urged both private and public sectors to promote access and equal participation of persons with disabilities.

The two-day workshop is aimed at protecting the rights of persons with disabilities and addressing there discrimination they encounter daily especially at their workplaces.
