Imo State Governor Hope Uzodinma has insisted that the spate of violent attacks being witnessed in some parts of the state are being sponsored by politicians, who are desperate to grab power by any means.

Addressing State House Correspondents on Tuesday, after a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari, Governor Uzodinma said he was in the Villa to inform the President of the current security situation in the state, particularly on last week Thursday’s attack by gunmen at a Continuous Voter’s Registration Centre in the state, which led to the death of one ad-hoc staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

He described the attack on the INEC adhoc staff as an afterthought by the gunmen, who had initially planned to attack the correctional facility in Okigwe but changed their plan, given the security arrangements put in place to prevent the attack.

Governor Uzodinma confirmed that two of the bandits who attacked the INEC officials have been arrested by the state police command, and are now providing relevant information on the whereabouts of others.

He said he also briefed the President on the ongoing construction of 44 kilometers of dualized Owerri-Orlu and 59 kilometres Owerri-Okigwe Federal Roads, being constructed by the state government.

He said the roads will be completed and commissioned by the President in May.

While responding to questions on the suggestions by a legal luminary, Afe Babalola, that an interim government should replace the current administration at the expiration of President Muhammadu Buhari’s government in 2023, Governor Uzodinma described the opinion as unconstitutional, adding that it is another way of inviting anarchy into the country.

He explained that the option of an interim government must follow due process.
