Indian PM, Narendra Modi gets Nigeria’s second national honour

President Bola Tinubu has conferred Nigeria’s second-highest national honour of Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger, GCON on Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi.

Modi was honoured on Sunday during a bilateral meeting at the Presidential Villa Abuja. The honour according to President Tinubu signifies Nigeria’s appreciation of India as a partner”.

Modi arrived in Abuja Saturday evening, and was received at Forecourt of the Villa on Sunday. The Indian leader was welcomed with his country’s national anthem, and Guard of Honour, mounted by Brigade of Guards, that rendered the Nigerian Anthem and led the visiting premier in inspection of the mounted parade. This was followed by a 21-gun salute after which Modi inspected the Guard of Honour.

Discussions on Sunday between both leaders included adding momentum their countries strategic partnership with focus on defence, energy, technology, trade, health, education and more.
Both leaders reaffirmed their countries commitment to a robust strategic partnership.

Others include joint commitment to UN Security Council reform and mutual support for permanent and non-permanent membership, corporations on regional peace and security in West Africa.

Modi’s visit is the first by an Indian Prime Minister since Manmohan Singh’s state visit in 2007, when the two countries established a strategic partnership.
