The Independent National Electoral Commission INEC has called on security agencies to be proactive in the face of ‘warning signals’ of violence and acrimony ahead of Edo and Ondo state Governorship elections.
Chairman of the commission Professor Mahmood Yakubu, made the call while speaking during a virtual meeting with the Inter-agency Consultative Committee on Election Security, ICCES, on Friday.

Professor Yakubu said with the developments ahead of the conduct of primaries by political parties, which tends to be very acrimonious, political tension may be carried forward into the electioneering campaigns and election day activities.
The INEC Boss, further stated that an early engagement with political parties and aspirants is necessary in order to create a peaceful atmosphere during the primaries and beyond.
He also called for an overhaul of the security architecture in states where elections are to hold, to conform with the policy document released by the commission for conducting elections in the context of Coronavirus Pandemic.
