The Senate has declared three senatorial seats vacant following the deaths of the lawmakers, paving the way for the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC to conduct bye-elections in line with constitutional provisions.
The announcement was made during Tuesday’s plenary by the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, who noted that the decision became necessary following the demise of the affected lawmakers.
The vacancies include Enugu North Senatorial District, Nasarawa North Senatorial District and Rivers South-East Senatorial District.
According to Akpabio, the declaration was made to enable INEC conduct bye-elections within the timeframe stipulated by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Before their demise, the seats were occupied by Mpigi Barinada who represented Rivers South-East, Godiya Akwashiki of Nasarawa North, and Okey Ezea from Enugu North.
INEC is now expected to commence the process of conducting bye-elections to fill the vacancies.
