The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC says it will revise the timetable and schedule of activities for the 2027 general elections to align with the provisions of the newly enacted Electoral Act 2026.
Commission’s Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan said this on wednesday during a meeting with State Resident Electoral Commissioners, RECs in Abuja.
Amupitan explained that the Commission had issued a Notice of Election two weeks ago, emphasising that the revision is necessary to ensure full compliance and operational coherence.
He also outlined related preparatory steps, including a forthcoming review of the Commission’s Regulations and Guidelines for the 2027 polls, a Voters Revalidation Exercise to further clean and strengthen the voters’ register, and the ongoing second phase of Continuous Voter Registration which runs from January 5 to April 17, 2026, as part of a year-long process concluding on August 30, 2026.
The briefing which also coincided with a courtesy visit from the Forum of State Independent Electoral Commissions of Nigeria led by its National Chairman, Mamman Nda Eri was also a reflective session following recent off-cycle elections, including the February 21, 2026, Federal Capital Territory Area Council poll and bye-elections in Kano and Rivers states.
While commending the peaceful conduct and strong performance in result uploads to the INEC Result Viewing, IReV portal averaging 97% for the FCT election, Amupitan highlighted areas needing urgent attention, particularly voter apathy and education on how to verify Voters polling unit details ahead of elections, polling unit punctuality and logistics.
The INEC Chairman also issued stern warning against logistical lapses and indiscipline.
The meeting saw the swearing-in of Chukwu Chukwuemeka Joseph as the new Resident Electoral Commissioner, REC for Abia State. Professor Amupitan charged him on professionalism and transparency in the discharge of his assignments.
National Chairman of State Independent Electoral Commissioners of Nigeria, Mamman Nda Eri commended INEC’s leadership and pledged that the forum will continue to work together to enhance the credibility and integrity of elections at all levels of governance.
