As part of measures to beef up security in all public secondary schools, Niger State Government has directed the closure of all schools for two weeks.

The directive is one of the decisions taken during an interface between officials of the Niger State Ministry Of Education and the Security Agencies.

The two-week closure according to the Commissioner in the Ministry Of Education, Hannatu Salihu, is to allow the security agencies to carry out a comprehensive assessment of risk areas in all public secondary schools in the state.

Before the closure of the secondary schools, the officials of the Ministry had held an emergency meeting with stakeholders, including the leadership of private school operators in the state.

The Commissioner reiterated government’s desire to ensure conducive teaching and learning atmosphere in all schools.

She urged parents, caregivers and members of the public, to cooperate with the government and security agencies, in giving out reliable information to curtail the activities of criminal elements.

Niger State Government had already announced the closure of secondary schools in Munya, Rafi Shiroro, and Mariga Local Government Areas, shortly after the news of the abduction of students, staff, and family members of Government Science College Kagara, on the seventeen of last month by gunmen.
