Nigeria’s House of Representatives wants the Inspector General of Police to ensure the immediate release of 18 persons kidnapped by sea pirates in Bille and Bonny Kingdom using the recently donated gunboats to facilitate the rescue.
The House resolution followed a motion of urgent public importance by Cyril Hart representing Degema/Bonny federal constituency of Rivers State, who called for the deployment of stationed security house boats at strategic points in the area to quickly arrest the development
Hart, who cited an incident in March 2025 where six passengers were abducted with one of the victims later killed after paying the demanded ransom, decried the rising activities of sea pirates on the waterways.

According to him, the escalating activities of the pirates is significantly impacting the local economy negatively and jeopardizing the livelihood of the people, noting that the recent attack resulted in the loss of properties worth millions of naira with the fate of the eighteen kidnapped persons still hanging in the balance.
The House mandated its Committees on Navy and Police to immediately commence implementation of its resolution and report back within four weeks for further legislative action.
