At least 20 patients with complex medical conditions, as well as hundreds of indigent and vulnerable Nigerians in Abuja, are to benefit from a 2-day free surgical outreach being put together by the International College of Surgeons (ICS), in collaboration with its Nigeria section.

The Chief Consultant Neurosurgeon and Chairman of the Local Organising Committee of the Scientific Conference with the sub-theme, “Focusing on Healthcare Financing Models, Public-Private Partnerships, and Strategic Tools for Optimising Surgical Safety”, Dr Charles Ugwuanyi, disclosed this during a pre-conference surgical workshop in Abuja on Tuesday.

The pre-conference surgical workshop is to support the vulnerable, especially many of whom cannot afford medical bills

A Senior Consultant and Chairman of the Surgical Outreach Committee, Dr Mandus Akonjom said the College’s mission was to reach underserved populations, hence the choice of Nigeria for the Conference, while a Specialist Anaesthesiologist, Dr Uzowulu Rosemary, cautioned against medical tourism, noting that Nigerian doctors, even abroad, deliver world-class care, due to background rigorous training.

The main Conference has its theme as “Surgical Safety in a Developing Economy: The Role of Technology and Healthcare Innovations.”
