The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has revealed that three out of four children can not read with understanding or solve simple mathematics problems in Nigeria, especially in the North West Region.

The UNICEF Chief of Field Office Kano Rahma Rihood said this at the commemoration of the International Day of Education 2024, in Kano.

Also speaking, Kano State Commissioner of Education Umar Haruna said Kano state government has joined the UN pilot safe schools project, with 48 boys and girls schools from each zone, in addition to the training and recruitment of more teachers in the state.

The theme for this year’s International Day of Education is “Learning for lasting peace”
