As part of measures to prevent a crisis in the forthcoming governorship election in Ondo State, journalists and media professionals have been enjoined to ensure verified and balanced reportage.

This was one of the focal points at a Media Stakeholders’ Roundtable, organised for journalists in Akure, the State Capital.

The media’s indispensable role in information dissemination, public enlightenment and as watchdog that safeguards credibility and transparency of the electoral process, cannot be over-emphasised.

These are some of the reasons this important institution is acknowledged globally, as the cornerstone of democracy.

To ensure media professionals and journalists do not fall short of this role, the International Press Centre, IPC, in conjunction with the Institute for Media and Society, as well as the European Union, organised this Stakeholders’ Roundtable.

At the event in Akure, Ondo State capital, the organisers urged journalists to be balanced and fair in their reportage on the fast-approaching governorship election in the State.

Other resource persons also emphasised the need for journalists to make their reports more people-inclusive by providing platforms for the voiceless.

The theme of the roundtable is ‘Professional, Inclusive, and Conflict Sensitive Reporting of the Ondo State Governorship Election.’
