Democracy in Nigeria has not been as robust as expected and it is still a work in progress.

That is the statement from the Peoples Redemption Party, PRP, as the party joins Nigerians across the country to commemorate the 2024 Democracy Day.

The political party through its National Publicity Secretary, Muhammed Ishaq said Nigeria is yet to witness significant advancements in social democracy despite the return of civil rule.

Ishaq said the 2023 general election served as a stark reminder of the challenges the country face in deepening the democracy.

According to him, the monetisation of the electoral process, lack of transparency, and disenfranchisement of voters have eroded the very foundation of democracy in Nigeria.

While it noted true democracy as one that is participatory, inclusive, and accountable; PRP called for immediate action to address the various issues and ensure that power truly reside in the people.

The party also called on civil society organisations, professional associations, and community groups to rise up to the challenge., saying it was time to organise and mobilise the populace to demand better governance from national leaders and institutions.

“We must work together to reclaim our democracy and ensure that it serves the interests of all Nigerians.”
